Another example was at the grocery store yesterday. Jayce started eating some grapes while sitting in the cart. Being the germaphobe I am (and noticing that recent food contamination warnings usually involve fruits and vegetables), I told him that the grapes had poison on them and we needed to wash them off (pesticides just didn't seem like the right word for a three year-old). He wanted to know more, so I explained that farmers use poison to kill off bugs to protect the fruit, and we consumers must wash it off so we don't get sick. His eyes got wide and he immediately stopped. Feeling satisfied with my success, I then realized that I probably went too far. I don't want Jayce having nightmares of sippies laced with unwashed fruit debris . . . he's only three! And does he really need graphic images of injuries, leading to hospitalization, as he sees cars pass on the street? And I don't even want to start on the whole straying-away-from-me-at-the-store paranoia that I've probably instilled. I want him to be safe, secure, and happy, and I'm trying to figure out how to accomplish that all at once.
Oh, and one other worry. My husband and I vowed that we wouldn't pressure Jayce to go to BYU (in the future, when he's older), but I think we're indirectly doing it already. We watch the games and cheer the team, we have BYU shirts and other paraphenalia, we talk about the school, we visit it often when we're in Provo, etc. Jayce is all about the Cougars (see shirt), and as much as we love that, we worry that we're sowing the seeds of BYU eventuality. And I don't think I can change that . . . my enthusiasm comes bursting through and I can't contain it (especially with football season around the corner -- go team!). My children are doomed! :)

There is no pressure to be a coug...you either make a good decision or a bad one! (Alright - please know I am totally kidding...but it is funny to think about!)
byu students are so weird. he should stay away.
Baby steps Lisa, baby steps.
Your kids are still so little!!! And you are doing a great job.
Mine are going into 4th and 5th grade. Wait till you have to have "the talk". That's when things really start getting hairy.
Just wait until kindergarden, then junior high, high school... I am getting a rash thinking about it! Just keep those kiddos close for as long as you can...
You are such a good mom, Lisa! That's funny, I've had the same conversation with Justin about the grapes (or apples, I can't remember). When he get's annoyed at my words of caution, I just tell him that Mom and Dad are the ones who are in charge of keeping him safe and teaching him how to be safe on his own.
Cougs are fine, Wolverines are fine too... :) I am also paranoid. Let me know if you figure it out.
I'm glad to know we aren't the only paranoid ones. I know members of my family have secretly rolled their eyes at Brad & I on more than one occasion... We've told Rachel that if she runs away from me at the grocery store that scary people might take her away and then we'd all be sad - no wonder she won't talk to anyone. Heck, I even use fake names for my children on my blog, but I guess I feel you can't be too safe in this day. Sorry, I'm just a paranoia enabler :)
I will be sending Jayce a USU shirt for Christmas! I love your grape story. I am the same way about germs and it does backfire on occasion. Douglas will never share a drink- not even with mom and dad. The boys are even worse now that I make them sanitize their hands before holding the baby. Douglas made his aunt do it when visiting. I wish he was just as afraid of the road and strangers as he is of germs.
I don't think you are going too far with the BYU thing yet. My dad threatened to disown me if I didn't go. Well I didn't go and he certainly still talks to me. I always knew it was mostly just talk!
Hey, just look at the BYU thing as reinforcing one of MANY GOOD decisions he could make in his future. Can't hurt to reinforce the GOOD, right? Ya, I totally let Kade eat the grapes right out of the plastic container at Sam's Club last week! He was hysterical...I was desperate...enough said. Maybe I need the poison talk Lisa? ;)
